Juno is almost as wonderfully obedient as I imagined.

I can’t stop thinking about it:

"Victoria, good to hear from you. Just wanted to check in on a few things for the upcoming launch. We’ve made some adjustments to the production timeline," Justin says, the words coming out casually confident.

Since talking to Juno yesterday, seeing the surprise flicker across her face when I mentioned Justin, I’ve been sitting with this unsettling feeling. Of course, it’s his role. He’s the President of Operations. But something about hearing myself say it—Justin does everything—made me realize how little I actually know about what’s happening in my own company. I can’t even imagine taking any of it back. I don’t have the expertise.

Guilt washes through me, heavy and insistent, as thoughts of my mother come rushing forward. She’d be devastated, I think.

She founded Kingsley Enterprises for us. For the environment. For the dream of leaving the world a little better, a little greener. Her love for nature, her ambition—it was all so clear. And now here I am, two years in, and I’ve let it slip through my fingers, letting someone else shoulder the weight of it all while I’ve remained in the background, comfortable but detached.

I push the thought away, but it lingers. The truth stings—I’m not doing enough.

I have to make a change. I have to step into my role, fully, not just as the name on the letterhead. I need to show her—beyond any doubt—that I still believe in what she built. That I still care. Because if I don’t, what was all this for?

“Adjustments?” I repeat, my voice steady but with just enough curiosity to keep him talking.

Justin laughs softly, but it feels more like a polite chuckle than anything genuine. "Yeah, just speeding things up a little. We’re ahead of schedule, so it’ll be fine." His words are breezy, casual, but something in the way he’s brushing it off makes my stomach tighten.

“I see.” I feel the weight of my last name on the tip of my tongue, but I don’t let it slip. “And you’re sure everything’s aligned with the original vision?”

There’s a pause. A moment where his confidence wavers, but only for a second.
